Round Three: Six the Hard Way
Thursday, October 25th
Hello, comic book fans, and welcome to the third round of the third season of Comic Book Idol. I’m your host J. Torres.
What a week it’s been!
I’m really just recovering from the dramarama and would rather not pick at the scabs, so if you’re interested in what transpired last round with the recount and the delay with the judging, please check the archives. And that’s just the stuff for public consumption ;)
So, let me just cut to the chase here…
After this week’s poll, with over 630 votes cast, the two contestants with the least number of votes and are therefore eliminated from the competition are:
Andrew Huerta

(Santa Ana, California)
Wilfredo Torres

(Lawrenceville, Georgia)Â
To see more from these fine artists, and what got them here in the first place, please visit their websites linked above.
Remember to come back to this blog for Brian Cronin’s interview with these idols, and also make sure to give them some love in our “Andrew Huerta and Wilfredo Torres Appreciation Thread” in the fourm.
There are no losers here, but we do have a winner this round. However, unlike Round 1, the bonus prize in Round 2 does not go to the top vote-getter but rather C.B.’s personal favorite. This hand-picked artist will have his “What Matters Most” pages published in Image Comics’ forthcoming Wonderlost trade paperback. And that lucky and deserving contestant (if you haven’t figured it out by now) is… Charles Paul Wilson III!
Congratulations once again, Charles!Â
You went the extra mile and lettered your pages, which won you brownie points, but it was the overall quality of your storytelling and attention to detail that made you a fan-favorite as well as one of the judges’ favorites, including of course C.B.’s. That’s two for two. Let’s see if that “III” stands for three-peat.
Keep an eye on CBR for more on Charles and the publishing details of his work for Wonderlost.
Now, on to the next round…

Round Three… Fight (the Big Boss)!Â
Idols, your third assignment involves “Invincible.”
While Robert Kirkman, creator of Invincible, has kindly provided us with this week’s plot script, our guest judge this round is Ryan Ottley, the ever-popular artist of the series.
That’s right. Plot script. Kirkman is Stan Lee, now you play Kirby. Or Ditko if you like.
You get the script and a little bit of visual reference generously provided by Ryan (found here and here), but that’s it. You’re on your own after that.Â
The winner of this round (as in our top vote-getter this time)Â gets to draw an original pin-up to be published in a future issue of Invincible.
Your deadline is now Monday, October 29 @ 3 PM (EST).
Please note the new time. Use it to your advantage. The deadline for judging (we’re trying!) and voting will follow suit.
If you’ve figured out how to use the CBR server, you know the procedure. If you haven’t (tsk-tsk), be nice to Brandon Hanvey because he’s the one to help you. As usual, please dont’ forget the subject line, thumbnails, etc.
This is the round that separates the Squidmen from the shrimpy boys and puts us on the road to the Final Four.
I hate seafood but I’m looking forward to some tasty pages from you guys this week!
Best of luck,Â
J.

Round 2 Poll now open

The poll will close on Thursday the 25th at 3 PM EST (12 PST).

Good luck to all the contestants.
Same bat channel, new bat time…
Wednesday, October 24th
With the Southern California wildfires affecting some of the people behind-the-scenes here at CBI, we’ve decided to move the posting time of the poll for Round 2 and we’re bringing back guest judge Vince Hernandez of Aspen Comics to pitch-hit some crits for us.
The poll for Round 2 is now scheduled to open starting today at 3 PM (EST). Since a number of our judges are from the West Coast, we are also considering making this the new time for the rest of the competition.
The official results of the poll as well as the next assignment are scheduled to be posted about an hour after the voting has ended.
Thank you for your attention and understanding.

Round 1 Recount

Voting scandal rocks round one of Comic Book Idol 3!
A new winner is named, while another contestant narrowly avoids disqualification.
And to think, some people thought Comic Book Idol was just about drawing pretty pictures.
Oh, no. It can get downright ugly, too.
When the ballots closed last Thursday, there was a narrow winner for round one – Caio Oliveira. But a CBI3 moderator suspected foul play may have swung the vote to Oliveira’s favor. After investigating the matter, it was discovered that multiple votes were cast by the same people, all in Oliveira’s favor.
CBI 3 rules state that only one vote is allowed per person. These votes, cast by colleagues of Oliveira, were subtracted from his total. With the new totals, there was also a new winner of round one – Charles Paul Wilson III. For winning round one, Wilson will get his three-page entry published in an upcoming Aspen Comic.
“While we certainly encourage contestants to drum up support and ask family and friends to vote for them, the rule has always been one person, one vote,†J Torres, host of Comic Book Idol 3, said. “Caio knew who one or two of the voters were, and while we can’t say he encouraged them, he also didn’t stop them from voting more than once. Caio apologized and even asked to be disqualified from the competition, just as (the Comic Book Resources team) were debating the matter. In the end, we decided to deduct the votes that we knew were from the same individuals and let Caio continue.â€
Brandon Hanvey, Comic Book Idol 3 moderator, was the first to notice suspect voting patterns in round one. Hanvey thinks the Comic Book Resources team made the right choice in not disqualifying Oliveira from the competition. How far Oliveira – and all the contestants – go in the competition should be left up to the voters, he said.
“(Oliveira) didn’t need the ‘ballot stuffing’ as he is talented and seems popular enough to go far in the competition,†Hanvey said. “Call it a lapse in judgment or turning a blind eye on his part, but for our part we’ve made our decision and it’s now up to the fans to decide Caio’s fate from here.â€
Caio Oliveira could not be reached for comment at this time.
Now that the drama of round one is settled, the eight remaining contestants have moved on to round two, where they have drawn a three-page script written by comic book writer C.B. Cebulski. Voting for round two opens Wednesday (10/24) at noon EST and closes at noon the next day. Fans can look at the art now by visiting http://forums.comicbookresources.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29
At the end of the competition, one artist will be crowned this season’s “Comic Book Idol†and awarded an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for the New York Comic Con, a “Witchblade†cover assignment, assignments from IDW Publishing and Oni Press, a slot in Image Comics’ “Pop Gun†anthology, and a few other great prizes.
Hosted by www.comicbookresources.com, the incredible talent pool for CBI 3 features a global field, with contestants from England, Brazil and Canada. It’s also a diverse field, with an accounting professional, a waiter and a security guard up against a batch of freelance artists.
The winner of Comic Book Idol 3 will be named Nov. 15. Patrick Scherberger and Carlos Rodriguez, the winners of the first two Comic Book Idol competitions, have gone on to become burgeoning comic book artists.
