Round Four: The Final Four
Thursday, November 1st
Welcome back to Comic Book Idol. I’m your host J. Torres. This is Round Four which narrows down the field to our Final Four contestants.
At the start of the last round, we cut eight artists down to six left in the contest and now we must say goodbye to two more. After this week’s poll, with over 700 votes cast, the two contestants with the least number of votes and who therefore have to leave us this week are:
Jose Holder

Nick Pitarra

Jose, you walk to the beat of your own drum and that’s what people liked best about you. Ryan Ottely wrote that “your stuff is great” in this round and Marc Silvestri dubbed you a “front-runner” throughout the contest. I think for you it’s just a question of the right project coming along.
Nick, for me, you had the most distinctive style of the group. You are the lovechild of the brilliant Frank Quitely and the late great Seth Fisher, two of my favorite contemporary comic book illustrators. I along with your fans appreciated your sense of humor and fun. If nothing else comes of this, drop me a line and let’s jam.
Please click the hyperlinks above to visit these amazing artists’ websites and take another look at the fine work that got them into this competition in the first place. Plus, remember to check out Brian Cronin’s exit interviews with these talented gents in “Idol Thoughts” right here on this very blog. And lastly, make sure to give our departing contestants some love in our “appreciation thread” in the CBI fourm.
Meanwhile, as two are sent home and four move on, one wins a bonus prize. The contestant who received the most votes in Round 3 and wins the pin-up assignment in an upcoming issue of “Invincible” is: Caio Oliveira!
Congratulations, Caio!
I know that you’re a big fan of “Invincible” and that this is going to be a thrill for you. I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the pin-up. Judging by your pages this round, it’s going to be something that impresses others fans of the series!
Thanks again to guest judge Ryan Ottley for his critiques of the contestants’ work and Robert Kirkman for supplying us last round’s script and bonus prize! Make sure to stay tuned to CBR for more on when we’ll get to see Caio’s work in the pages of “Invincible.”
But for now…

Round Four… Fight (the Future)!
Idols, your next assignment involves the Legion of Super-Heroes.
This round’s guest judge is artist Francis Manapul, who recently signed an exclusive with DC Comics and along with the legendary Jim Shooter will be taking over the Legion book starting in December. Francis also provides us with this week’s four-page plot script.
That’s right, four pages. Round Four. Final Four. Four pages. See any patterns there?
Once again, the script is all you’re getting. It’s up to you to find the reference you need.
As you’ll see when you read Francis’ script, he’s basically giving you a guideline for a kind of sample or submission. You’ve drawn three such samples up to this point and a few of you (including contestants no longer in the contest) have impressed enough to solicit informal offers or at least open talks with the fine folks at Aspen, Image, and Oni.
How about a shot at doing the same at DC Comics?
Francis will hand-pick one of you and submit your samples to Legion editor Mike Marts for some invaluable feedback and a really good networking opportunity. Incidentally, Mike got me my first “big” assignment at Marvel way back when (”Black Panther” #57-58), so I can say from experience that he’s a good guy to have in your corner. How’s that for a bonus prize?
This round’s deadline is Monday, November 5 @ 3 PM (EST).
The four of you know the drill already, so there’s nothing left for me to say except… Long Live the Legion!
Oh, and good luck.
J.
