Let’s take a look at what folks thought about the contestants in Round Four in the Public Comment Thread!….

Again, I’m only posting comments from people who then voted for that contestant!

Caio Oliveira

Goyo had this to say about Caio’s work…

Caio Oliveira - I really admire your “cool” style. The page with the multitude running away from the robot was awesome! Great thing for you to make a “multi-species” planet, instead of just puting one alien race on the pages, it definetly showed how varied your characters can be. Great last page, though I feel there are too many Legionaires there… I guess you could do without 4 or 5 characters to create a bigger impact.

Caio: man, what a awesome work! Following the script, but always taking the gaps to keep your identity, as always! This is the caracteristic that separates regular workers from the artists! Really liked the variety of aliens! The where’s waldo thing got me really interested in the details, and I’m the kind of guy who only looks to the story, not to the art! lol The last page could be better, if the poses were different and more dynamic, but the inclusion of the legionnaires created by Sergio Aragones were a nice touch!

You have my vote, dude!

Charles Paul Wilson III

+ That last splash was great! I liked the from the side view with a variety in standing and flying.
+ The robot was very menacing and definitely had a sense of drama in the setup.
- Some of the flow on page three was a bit weak. It’s a little confusing and I think using fewer panels to showcase others would have been better. For example, I don’t think four was needed as the menace was already established. And five and six were a bit redundant…I think six could’ve stood alone.
- I think showing more aliens around would have been effective and increased the drama. The city seems way too sparsely populated.

Former contestant Nick Pitarra chimed in…

Great emotion. Great rendering. Great 1st page. You loose a little by pulling so far back on the robot attack. It feels less dramatic with the pull out I guess. But you recover well on the following page, by bringing the attack back to the alien. Great trip sequence. Great helping up sequence. Classic last page shot. My favorite overall this round.

Dan McDaid

Marvel artist Patrick Zircher had kind words for Dan…

Dan,
Your work on these Legion pages is charming! This is the best storytelling I’ve seen in the competition so far. Extraordinarily polished flow from panel to panel and terrific use of viewpoints.
Love it, great job.

Overall, I thought McDaid did the best this round. His alien child was childlike and evoked those feelings of sympathy. His group shot was solid and dynamic and everything he did was clean and fun. Even if he doesn’t win this competition, I’m confident we’ll be seeing his work in major publications very soon. He’s clearly demonstrated the chops necessary to work in the industry.

Jon Reed

Kamgates had this to say:

I think you’re my favorite this week. I read the ‘everyone running but ball-kid’ beat the easiest out of everyone and I love your
destroying the city shot. It’s got that faint quirkiness that makes you feel the story to come is going to be a lot of fun to read. Also, looking at your first shot of Saturn Girl especially, it seems like you’ve taken some of the judges advice and toned down some of your exaggerated proportions and crotch width in favor of anatomy. That’s cool to see!

Yeah, Jon, these pages are terrific! Two and four specially are winners. Looks like finally you’re in your element!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, folks!!
