With the results today, we say goodbye to Warren Leonhardt and Daniel Lafrance, so I thought I’d do a quick gallery of some of their work, to show off their skills.
Here is a story that Warren whipped together that got him noticed for Comic Book Idol 3…

Very nice storytelling skills.
Here is another three pages by Warren, only sans dialogue…

Great stuff, Warren! You can see more of his work at his website, warrenleonhardt.com.
Next, here is an amazing piece of sequential work by Dan Lafrance. It is nine pages of excellent storytelling…all without dialogue!!!

Isn’t that very impressive?

First of all, thanks to J. Torres and the CBI 3 crew for arranging this great opportunity to gain some exposure for up and comers in this industry. After reading ‘The Complete Copybook Tales’, it’s clear to me that you haven’t forgotten what it’s like on the other side of the fence. Especially thank you to Brandon for staying up all night to count up the running tallies! And I know the judges are totally busy in ways I can’t imagine, so thank you all for taking the time to participate and give thoughtful crits.
The judges crits were what I expected: fair, balanced, professional and honest. I’ll be internalizing all the points as I do my revisions to suit as many of the notes as I can. I find it’s the best way for me to internalize the points made.
Considering I’ve done a grand total of 9 pages of comic book pages EVER I never expected to even be considered in the T10 and was fully expecting to be amid the Play At Home thread. So this was amazing to be included in that super-talented pack to 10! Thank you to whomever it was in the selection committee who deemed me worthy!
To give you an indication of where I thought I was in terms of skill, I ordered a correspondence course from Joe Kubert’s World of Cartooning (the Pencilling one) before I even found out I would be competing. So, armed with the great critiques from here, plus the course, expect to see my name around from time to time. My commitments in television animation keep me hopping and got in the way of me doing my best work for this contest, but I’ll be poking my head into the Play At Home rounds as deadlines permit!
Advice to anyone even submitting work to the prelims: CLEAR THE ROAD BEFORE YOU APPLY. Because you never know.
GOOD LUCK TO THE REMAINING 8!! It’s a great show!
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!
Cheers,
~ w.
