CBI3 Finalist Wilfredo Torres Joins Brown, Golden on “Demon’s Regret”

Friday, March 21st

CBI3 finalist Wilfredo Torres joins Mitch Brown & Michel Golden on a new mini series from Digital Webbing! Congratulations, Wilfredo!

Take some fallen angels, a bit of fire and brimstone, a disgruntled immortal, a plan to out-deceive the Great Deceiver himself; throw in a slew of Michael Golden covers; and you’ve got the upcoming, highly anticipated mini-series Demon’s Regret nailed on a spike.

Germinating in the brain of writer Mitch Brown for over two years, the plot of Demon’s Regret tags along with the 1/3 of the fallen angels who decide to follow Lucifer in rebellion and war with Archangel Michael. But what happens to those angels that choose the path of evil rather than good? No pathway to salvation, no way of turning back once the dye is cast?!

And, what happens if one of those fallen angels–demons–regrets his decision?

The story focuses on one such angel, Asmodeus, who, although he can never give up his demon status, chooses to assist with the commission of lesser evil to stop greater wrongs as an expression of his anger toward Lucifer. He has done so throughout history….as the reader will soon discover!

But what transpires if/when the boss discovers the ruse?

With shrewd dialogue and story structure from Brown, the interior art is provided by talented creator Wilfredo Torres, who made his first foray into comics on Terminus Media’s series of Evolution books. After being selected as a Top Ten finalist on Comic Book Resources–CBI3, Wilfredo went on to work for Mark Waid on Boom! Studio’s limited series, Salem: Queen of Thorns. His fine line work is an inspired choice to take us into the underworld and beyond.

Cover duties go to comics mastermind Michael Golden, who, with recent work on Iron Man, Exiles, Heroes for Hire, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, and G.I. Joe, seems a perfect choice to bring some devilish dealings to the Demon’s Regret frontage. Touted for his groundbreaking work on The ‘Nam, Micronauts, Dr. Strange, Batman, and Nightwing, recent art projects on Golden include such titles as Modern Masters–Michael Golden; Modern Masters: In the Studio with Michael Golden DVD; Excess The Art of Michael Golden, (going into a second printing), and the upcoming Creator Chronicles: Michael Golden Sketch Cover DVD.

Published by Digital Webbing, Demon’s Regret is a unique anti-hero tale that fits in nicely with Digital Webbing’s themed books such as “Bloodrayne” and “Bleeders,” while also reminding us of some other anti-heroes in the comics lexicon who too sometimes use evil to combat evil… Unlike the guy with the skull on his chest and the AK47, however, Asmodeus has no choice.

Come along for the riveting ride!

“Demon’s Regret” can be ordered from the Digital Webbing section of the Diamond catalogue, or directly from their website at: www.digitalwebbing.com

Press Release: Jon Reed Wins CBI3

Friday, November 16th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jon Reed wins Comic Book Idol 3!
Wins by less than 1%… Reed goes from an accounting assistant to comic book fame by winning the popular comic book art contest.

LOS ANGELES - After thousands of votes have been cast, an accounting assistant from Alexandria, Va., is the new Comic Book Idol. And he may need a new computer mouse after wearing his out.

“I just kept hitting ‘refresh,’ ‘refresh,’ ‘refresh,’” says Jon Reed, the Comic Book Idol 3 winner. He was eagerly watching as the votes were coming in, and with such a narrow margin of victory – an even 600 votes for Reed, while the runner-up, Charles Paul Wilson III, finished with an oh-so-close 581 votes – one can understand the nervousness he must have experienced. “It was stressful,” sighs Reed.

By winning CBI 3, the comic artist talent search contest hosted by www.comicbookresources.com, Reed gets an all-expense paid trip to the 2008 New York City Comicon, where Comic Book Idol host and comic book writer J Torres will help him network and meet industry leaders. Reed also gets assignments from IDW Publishing, Oni Press and Image Comics for winning the contest.

“I think that even previous contestants will agree that this was the most diverse and polished group of ten we’ve seen to date,” Torres said. “That made it for a tougher contest for those involved, and a better show for us fans to watch.”

Reed outlasted an incredible talent pool for CBI 3 that featured a global field, with contestants from England, Brazil and Canada. It was also a diverse field, with not only the accounting professional, who eventually won, but also a waiter and a security guard up against a batch of freelance artists. And the fans flocked to the competition – comicbookresources.com experienced a 500% increase in new traffic to its forum during the Comic Book Idol contest.

“It was funny listening to others (not involved in the contest), how stressed out they were,” Reed says. “I think people like to get behind someone… it’s like reality TV.”

Fans will be able to continue to cheer for Reed, as he is serious about making it in the comic book profession. He’s been dreaming of being a comic book artist since kindergarten, he says, and he was so dedicated to competing in Comic Book Idol 3 that he took sick days from work to stay home and complete the assignments.

“I’ve never imagined myself doing any other thing than drawing comics,” the 28-year-old says. “If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. I’ve heard how tough it is to break into the paid artists club. But I’ve always loved drawing comics, and I always will.”

And it’s “wait until next year” for the rest of the would-be Comic Book Idols.

“Each time we run Comic Book Idol we learn a lot about how to run it better and how to improve future editions,” Jonah Weiland, executive producer of Comicbookresources.com, says. “That said, we’ve already begun planning for the 2008 edition of the contest and we’ve got big multi-media plans that should make Comic Book Idol that much more engaging for contestants and viewers alike.”

The Winner of Comic Book Idol 3 is…

Thursday, November 15th

Hello, comic book fans, and welcome to the season finale of Comic Book Idol 3.

I’m your host J. Torres and I’m pleased to announce that, after a record of close to 1200 votes cast in our final poll, the results are in…

Jon Reed = 600 votes

Charles Paul Wilson III = 581 votes

That means that Jon Reed of Alexandria, Virginia is this season’s Comic Book Idol! Congratulations, Jon!

You win an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for the New York Comic Con, a Witchblade cover assignment, assignments from IDW Publishing and Oni Press, and a slot in Image Comics’ Pop Gun anthology.

Jon, for me and a couple of the judges, you deserve the “Most Improved Player” award on top of it all. You were the “little account assistant that could.” I’d also throw “Miss Congeniality” your way because you’re such a nice guy. If we were dealing with each other on eBay, my feedback for you would read: “Good communication. Would do business with again.” In other words, I like what you have to offer and you sold me on your unique style of art. In the previous round in particular, in my humble opinion, I thought you turned in the best pages. I look forward to seeing what you end up doing for IDW and Oni, and you know where to find me if you need a hand with the Pop Gun story ;)

Meanwhile, Charles doesn’t walk away from the contest empty-handed! He’s going to have his artwork from Rounds 1 and 2 published in an upcoming issue of “Fathom” and the forthcoming “Wonderlost” trade paperback. And I’m sure that won’t be the last we hear of CPW3.

Thanks for playing such a good game, Charles. You were solid and professional throughout the entire contest and you should be proud of getting this far. We all know you’re going even further from here.

Don’t miss Brian Cronin’s interviews with our winner and first runner-up in “Idol Thoughts.” And make sure to stay tuned to CBR for release dates and other details not only about Jon and Charles’ work, but some exciting news regarding some of our other contestants. I think many fans will be happy to see where some of their favorites have ended up…

Thanks to all ten of our talented contestants for the excitment, camaraderie and great art that they brought to this year’s competition. Thanks to all our judges who took time out of their busy schedules and provided the contestants with some insightful, invaluable critiques. Thanks to Jonah, Brandon, Brian, Seth and the rest of the CBR crew for all their hard work and support behind the scenes. And thanks to all of YOU for voting, posting, and watching this very memorable season of Comic Book Idol!

See you next time?

J.
